Please stand, put your right hand over your heart. Ready, begin.

SPEAKER_16 0:00:27

SPEAKER_13 0:01:42

I am present, thank you.

SPEAKER_08 0:01:45

Ms. Holahan? Present. Mrs. Renner? Mr. Vara?

SPEAKER_14 0:01:50

Present.

SPEAKER_08 0:01:50

And I am present, okay. We have no minutes tonight, so we'll move on to public participation. This section of the agenda is meant for any member of the public to address the board on any agenda item listed tonight. This is the time that any member of the public may address the board on any agenda item before or during the board's consideration of the item. Provided the person submits a completed registration card to address the board, form to the clerk of the board or their designee prior to the time the chairperson calls the item for the board's consideration. This is not meant to be a debating period. Complaints and problems relating to policy matters will be referred to the superintendent. And our first person up is Mr. Blatchley.

SPEAKER_11 0:02:33

Good evening, Board, Superintendent Cabral and Cabinet. My name's Paul Blatchley, I live in trustee area five, and I'm a concerned high school parent. Be kind to your mind, live drug free. I support Red Ribbon Week, but I've talked to you before about the fact that there's a mind altering device that I'd say 90% of your middle schoolers and high schoolers have every day with them at school. And that's their cell phone. So I would say, be kind to your mind. Put your cell phone away. Put your smartphone away. If you're not including social media addiction and device addiction as part of this Red Ribbon Week, I think you're missing out on an opportunity there. Page 1457 of the safety plan, the 1700 page safety plan, the REV safety plan, didn't mention a football stadium in the facilities. So I'm not sure who's reading that. It's a long report. But when you adopt it tonight, expect follow up on whether or not you're following that safety plan. And then I would finally like to ask you on your association reports Please either remove that from the board agenda or move it to another location So parents don't have to sit through those Association reports the board wants to get that that's fine But it's really I consider it a waste of parents time. Thank you

SPEAKER_08 0:04:11

Thank you. We have no student trustee report this evening, so we'll move on to association reports. First up, we have our TA, Mrs. Apt.

SPEAKER_04 0:04:31

Good evening school board trustees, Superintendent Cabral, cabinet, staff, and community. RTA is continuing our school visits over the next couple of months. Tomorrow we'll be visiting Crafton and getting to see their extended learning program and how early release Wednesdays work for their school. We've already had the pleasure of spending the day at Clement, Beatty, Moore, Franklin, and Judson-Brown. The commitment our educators, certificated, classified, and management have to our students and community is inspiring and affirming. Thank you for those we visit, for your time and insight, and we're looking forward to seeing all the other sites. One of the parts I love about this is the chance to recognize some of our outstanding certificated staff, and tonight I'd like to command Sean Komodina for finishing his 27th season of RHS girls tennis team and being undefeated CBL champions. Jennifer Klassen at RHS just finished her 12th season, also undefeated CBL league champion for girls golf. And then two teachers, Laura Shea from Moore and Lydia Tekin from Smiley, just were awarded C-STEM Teacher of the Year at a special event at UC Davis. And finally, I want to recognize Jeremy Boucher at Moore for literally saving a student's life with his quick action and calm ability to use the Heimlich maneuver. To all our educators in our district, thank you each and every day for the impact you're making for the students in our community. And thank you for the time this evening to share.

SPEAKER_08 0:06:11

Thank you. We do not have reports for respite or rapid this evening, so we're going to move on to board committee reports. We're going to do it a little bit differently. We're just going to see if anyone has a report that they would like to read out. Jim? Michelle? Okay.

SPEAKER_16 0:06:29

Do? And I broke my glasses, so hopefully I can read this. Compact's first mixer was held at the Burrage Mansion on October 12th. Thank you, Jim, for attending. There were 27 students and 18 adults. The Compact Steering Committee will meet this Thursday. And the clubs at REV and Citrus Valley are looking for an advisor. The students at these schools are anxious to get started for the year, and they hope that an adult steps up and helps out. And on to rep. Okay, AAA Academy will be having a fall minicamp Monday, November 20th through Wednesday, the 22nd. Child can go half day from 7.30 to 1.30 or full day 7.30 to 5.30. Go to repforschools.com to register and do it quick because space is limited. And just a reminder that the Turkey Trot is on Thanksgiving morning, November 23rd and is open to everyone and volunteers are needed. Okay Parks and Rec Advisory Commission. The city is moving forward with the pump track and they will bring more information in the coming months which I will pass on to you. Trick-or-treating on Olive Avenue is back and the street will be closed from Caron to Center. So stay safe everyone and enjoy your Halloween.

SPEAKER_08 0:07:58

note that The safe trick-or-treat is no longer on state but is being moved to all of correct And there well, they're just not doing the one downtown. Okay Thank you Next we'll have the superintendent's report. Mr. Cabral

SPEAKER_12 0:08:14

Thank you. Yes, good evening, everyone. A couple exciting events that have happened over the last couple of weeks. Anybody who had a chance to go to the resource fair at Redlands High School, excellent event. Thank you to everybody who put all the work that it took to. You know have that event and also everybody who participated by Going to the event and then today I saw one of the the the best things ever over at mission elementary school They had an eSports tournament, but it was a little bit different than you might imagine because Loma Linda fire department Chief battalion. I'm gonna mess up his name both sure or voucher Was there he has led a group of fifth graders that he's that the fire department is mentoring and And they asked the San Bernardino County sheriffs to participate, and so you had police officers and firemen going one on one in an eSports tournament on a game that I had no idea what was happening. But it was pretty awesome to see police officers going against 5th graders and firemen going against 5th graders and it was like a tournament. In the end, the top two players were 5th graders, of course, because they beat up on all the adults who had no idea how to play the game. But it was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed it. So Principal Castorena, nice work on a great event and to the Battalion Chief of Loma Linda Fire, we really appreciate your support and the collaboration with our school. Thank you.

SPEAKER_08 0:09:42

Thank you, Mr. Capral. We'll now move on to superintendent's recommendations under business services consent items. Mr. Hill, do you have any changes or additions?

SPEAKER_01 0:09:50

No changes or additions tonight. Thank you.

SPEAKER_08 0:09:55

Can I get a motion to approve item 13A, consent items B through T?

SPEAKER_01 0:10:00

So moved.

SPEAKER_08 0:10:00

Second. Thank you, Alex. Thank you, Patty. Any discussion? All right, all those in favor say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Chair votes aye and so ordered. We have no business services action items so we'll move on to educational services consent items.

SPEAKER_10 0:10:18

Thank you President Ayala-Cantaro. I don't have changes on consent but I do have some changes on a few action items that I'd like to give to you now. First of all, A is your Red Ribbon Week. You guys should all have a packet up there. So thank you for our Student Services Director for doing that for us and collecting that from our schools for you all. Item B is our Safe Schools Plans. Comprehensive Safe Schools or School Safe Plans is kind of an ongoing process. This is just becomes an initial approval. However, a number of them are missing the necessary signatures. And so we're gonna pull Eight of them tonight and we'll bring them back to you next time with the appropriate signatures from their committees. Arroyo Verde, Mentone Mission, Beatty, Moore, Citrus Valley, RHS, and E Academy. We will bring those back to you once they have all the complete set of signatures that they need. Those schools have all done their updates to their plan itself at this point. They just are missing some signatures from their committees. And again, these are ongoing plans. They can make reviews and changes and updates throughout the year once they meet with law enforcement, fire, and so on, as long as they're fully completed with their school site councils by March. Item C, stipulated expulsion recommendation for student should end after first semester for the 23-24 school year. So that second semester portion should be scratched. So where it says with the second semester being suspended, that is not the case for that stipulated expulsion. Lastly, and I apologize again, letter F. Letter F should read the remainder of first semester and all of second semester for the 2023-2024 school year. So that's not suspended enforcement for the second semester, but all of the second semester for that student on letter F.

SPEAKER_08 0:12:30

I might have lost that one. Can you repeat that for me? I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_10 0:12:34

Sure. So if you're looking at F, it's approved stipulated expulsion regarding student number, expulsion through the remainder of first semester. And then instead of what's there, what should be added is and all of the second semester for the 23-24 semester. Oh, OK. are stipulated expulsions which mean that the, uh, families and students have agreed to the terms.

SPEAKER_08 0:13:08

Okay. So we are back to consent items, correct? Yes. Okay. So can I get a motion to approve items 15A, consent items B through F?

SPEAKER_14 0:13:21

So moved.

SPEAKER_08 0:13:22

Okay. Any discussion? All those in favor, say aye. Aye. Opposed? Chair votes aye, and so ordered. OK, now we're moving on to the amended ones. So approved consent items detailed in 15C through, nope, it's B. Sorry. A. A, sorry. Okay, sorry, sorry about that. Under educational services action, we'll start with the national red ribbon campaign resolution. Adopt resolution number 12, 2023-24, national red ribbon campaign supporting red ribbon week, October 23rd to the 31st, 2023. Can I have a motion?

SPEAKER_13 0:14:09

So moved. Second.

SPEAKER_08 0:14:11

All right, thank you Alex, thank you Jim. Any discussion?

SPEAKER_13 0:14:14

Maybe one comment. I like Mr. Blashley's idea about technology addictions, maybe for next year, because certainly video games, I hate to say that for our, you know, winning national champions, but, you know, there's a lot of evidence that shows that video games can be addictive, and certainly social media is a part of everybody's life and somewhat addictive. So thanks for that suggestion, Mr. Blashley. We'll look at that next year.

SPEAKER_08 0:14:44

Okay, any other discussion? All right, all those in favor say aye.

SPEAKER_09 0:14:49

Aye.

SPEAKER_08 0:14:50

Any opposed? Chair votes aye and so ordered. We are not approving the item B. Yes, you are. We are, sorry. Just without.

SPEAKER_10 0:15:04

We are, yes. Minus those eight schools.

SPEAKER_08 0:15:16

So item B, adopt 2023-24 comprehensive school safety plans for the following school sites. Bryn Mawr Elementary, Crafton Elementary, Cram Elementary, Franklin Elementary, Highland Grove Elementary, Judson and Brown Elementary, Kimberly Elementary, Kingsbury Elementary, Lugonia Elementary, Mariposa Elementary, McKinley Elementary, Smiley Elementary, Victoria Elementary, Clement Middle School, Cote Middle School, Redlands East Valley High School, and Orange Wood High School.

SPEAKER_05 0:15:42

All right.

SPEAKER_08 0:15:46

Thank you, Patty. Thank you, Alex. Any discussion? All those in favor say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Chair was aye and so ordered. Okay, can I have a motion to take items 16C through 16H with the corrections that Mr. Wagner suggested?

SPEAKER_00 0:16:17

Moved.

SPEAKER_08 0:16:17

Thank you, Jim. Can I have a second? Second. Thank you, Michelle. Any discussion? All right, all those in favor say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Chair votes aye and so ordered. Moving on to consent items under human resources. Dr. Robertson Phillips. Do you have any changes or additions?

SPEAKER_00 0:16:35

I have no changes or additions this evening. Thank you.

SPEAKER_08 0:16:38

Thank you Can I get a motion to approve item 17a consent items b through double a I'll move approval and i'm going to abstain from uh e as an elephant Okay, second. All right. Thank you. Patty. Thank you alex any discussion All right, all those in favor say aye.

SPEAKER_05 0:16:57

Aye. Aye.

SPEAKER_08 0:16:58

Any opposed? Chair votes aye and so ordered. We have no human resources action items. At this time, we'll read the closed session report readouts. In regards to the public employee employment part of the agenda, I would like to report the following. In closed session, the board took action to appoint Kirtan Shah to the position of director three fiscal services effective November 6, 2023 at step two of the management team salary schedule with the following vote. Ayala Quintero, Holohan, O'Neill, Renler, voting aye. Mr. Barr was absent. Is Kirtan Shah here tonight? Welcome. Did you bring anyone here with you tonight? Smart move. Well, congratulations and welcome. In closed session, the board took action to appoint Jennifer Petty to the position of Child Nutritional Services Operations and Compliance Manager, effective October 25th, 2023 at step one of the management team salary schedule with the following vote. Ayala Quintero, Holohan, O'Neill, Renler voting aye. Mr. Barr was absent. Jennifer, are you here tonight? Welcome. Did you bring anyone with you tonight? Very nice. Well, welcome. Thank you. Congratulations. Okay, so once again, welcome to our new employees. We have no discussion items this evening, so we'll move on to the community import portion of our agenda. Okay, I don't know which I've got. Sorry about that, okay. This is the time that any member of the public may address the board on anything that falls under the jurisdiction of the Board of Education provided the person submits a completed registration card to the clerk of the board or his or her designee prior to public participation. This is not meant to be a debating period, complaints and problems relating to policy matters. Will be referred to the superintendent. The person wishing to address the board shall, when recognized by the chairperson of the board, step up to the podium, microphone, and announce their name. The chairperson shall limit the amount of time in which a member of the public may use in addressing the board to three minutes, unless the chairperson or majority of the board determines that a different limit is appropriate. And I just want to acknowledge the names of emails that we received. Michelle Whitmore, Paula Angel, Lizzie Antos, Robert C. M. Born, and Guesto Tweet. Okay. So we'll move on to our first public comment and it is Dale Broom and followed by Leah.

SPEAKER_09 0:20:50

Good evening. school board trustees and superintendents. We've been complaining to the school board for almost a year about the sexually graphic books that are in our school library. This spring and summer, Awaken Redlands submitted nine formal library book complaints. All four of the high school principals have decided that six of these books are perfectly acceptable reading material for high schoolers. even admitting that they contain sexually graphic scenes and dialogue. We've appealed six of these books to Julie Swan for district review at the end of July, but have not heard anything from her. The three other books have not even been reviewed at the school level. Tonight I'm going to read an excerpt from the book Looking for Alaska by John Green, which is in both Redlands High School and Rev High School. This is the story about a teenage boy named Pudge who has a sexual infatuation with an older teen named Alaska who is only 16 years old but is already in a sexual dating relationship with a college student. She along with an older man, the colonel, agreed to coach Pudge on how to have a girlfriend and get laid. On page 99, she describes the four-step method. Quote, French, feel, finger, fuck. It's like you skipped third grade, Alaska scolds Pudge. There's also a scene on page 87 in which Alaska and Pudge view pornographic video together in a school classroom. Pudge describes the content. It opens with a woman standing on a bridge with her legs spread while a guy knelt in front of her, giving her oral sex. A woman crouched on her hands and knees while a guy knelt behind her. She kept saying, give it to me, and moaning. I couldn't help but take mental note. Hands on her shoulder I note. Fast, but not too fast, or it's going to be over fast. Keep your grunting to a minimum. Then there's a section on page 126 to 127 where Pudge has his first sexual encounter with a girl named Laura. quote, Laura unbuttoned and pulled my boxers down a little and pulled out my penis, and then she wrapped her hand around it and put it in her mouth. She did exactly what Alaska told her to do, and I did exactly what Alaska said I would do, which was die a hundred little ecstatic deaths, my fist clenched, my body shaking. It was my first orgasm with a girl. Finally, Pudge successfully is winning Alaska over and he consummates his relationship with her on page 132. Quote, she moved my hands from her waist to her breast, tracing the outline of her breast and then cupping one of my hands and squeezing softly. We moved together my body between her legs. So you can see that this book really has a lot of sexually graphic material. It has no place in a middle school library. Fortunately, it was removed from the four middle school libraries based on our complaints. But it is still present in two of our high schools. So I would argue that this book is not appropriate even for high schoolers to read. Okay, we've not really heard any formal appeal process that's been done by the school. We need to have some action from this administration and stop stonewalling us on this issue of these school library books. Thank you.

SPEAKER_08 0:23:51

Thank you, Mr. Broom. Okay, up next. Sorry about that. Up next, we have Leah followed by Mr. Blatchley.

SPEAKER_02 0:24:01

Hi, good evening board and superintendent. I haven't been able to come to a lot of the meetings lately, so it's been a while since I've spoken. But I have been able to watch them online, and I wanted to address some of the comments that I've heard while watching online. I want to urge you guys to place parental notification on the agenda. I feel like parents should know what is going on with their kids. Children cannot even take medication or a Tylenol at school. So why are we letting them make this decision without parental consent if they want to change their gender or use different bathrooms or whatever? I've also heard comments about that we don't own our children and that children are their own person, which is true in a sense. But let me ask you something. If you have a child that's an underage driver and they get into an accident with someone who's liable, parents, right? So shouldn't the parents be able to make decisions for their kids? That's our right for our children is to decide what's right for them. And Mr. Cabral, in a couple of meetings ago, you had mentioned something. about parents can review their child's school record. And I thought that was a very good suggestion. And I think that that's a good way for parents to see what's going on with their children while we attempt to get this notification on the agenda. In your comments, can you explain how that can be done? If not, I can call the school district and find out. But that's all I have. Thank you.

SPEAKER_08 0:25:53

Thank you. Up next is Mr. Blatchley, followed by Joshua Hall.

SPEAKER_11 0:26:00

Good evening again. I'd just like to echo what she just said. If you read those school safety plans, you'd be amazed at how many statements there are in there about parents and getting parents involved if their student is having bad behavior or other things are going on with the student. So with the idea that you would cut parents out of notification of things going on with their students, I don't get it. That's why the last board meeting really makes me feel sad, because it feels like the district is getting so far away from the main charge, right? Which is to just educate the kids in the basics. I'm sorry to be a Debbie Downer, and I appreciate you, Mr. O'Neill, for your kind words before. But at last board meeting, Mr. O'Neill said he trusts the teachers to do the right thing. Well, did you trust Laura Whitehurst to do the right thing right before she did the wrong thing? How about Joseph Nardella? Do we trust him to do the right thing right before he did the wrong thing? So the board should be acting as a check on the district, not a rubber stamp. You should be looking at these board agendas and not just approving them. Now maybe you guys are making some side agreements or doing something off the record and you just come up here and rubber stamp everything. You know, the whole flag policy discussion, right? It wouldn't matter in the current environment whether or not the board passed some sort of flag policy because I think you see from the reaction of the teachers They're just going to ignore it, right? The other thing is the school safety plans don't say anything about putting pride flags into school classrooms, even though you had a whole bunch of kids get up and say, yeah, I don't feel safe. Teachers got up, these kids don't feel safe without a pride flag on the wall, right? So why is that not part of your safety plan? The other thing is that, you know, I'm outside before the meeting and people are joking about indoctrination. Ooh, let me give you a pride flag, I'm indoctrinating you. And I know Miss Ayala-Cantaro joked about, or didn't joke about, but said, hey, there's no indoctrination, come to the schools. I do feel like, I mean, it's a shame, right? Parents should come and sit in classrooms. You should get groups of parents together and you should just come and sit in classrooms because The problem with the district, and I've said it before, is that the teachers essentially can deliver any content any way they want. you know, emphasize certain areas of the curriculum based on their own personal beliefs. You know, this idea of we give you textbooks and I don't teach out of the textbook, I teach out of my own materials. So I just think that there's more that could be done from the board's perspective and from the district perspective. Thank you.

SPEAKER_08 0:29:02

Thank you, Mr. Blashley. Up next we have Joshua Hall followed by Candy Olsen.

SPEAKER_15 0:29:09

I'd like to speak on AB 1078. Recently, AB 1078 was signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newsom. And its stated objective is to ensure that all students have access to the appropriate learning materials and textbooks, English, math, science, history, geography, et cetera. There is nothing educational about the LGBTQ ideology, gender queer theory, or the lifestyle. There is a provision in AB 1078 which prohibits removing content from the LGBTQ plus community and its ideology. However, just because AB 1078 prohibits the removal of LGBTQ content from public and school libraries, You can still exercise your own authority to remove that content. And you should. You are legally liable to the parents and to the community. And even though I'm not a parent, I side with the parents. Oh, also, AB 1078, by By not allowing removal of LGBTQ content, AB 1078 is going against its stated purpose of ensuring that students have access to all the appropriate materials. Because as I said, LGBTQ ideology and the lifestyle is not appropriate for students that are still in, even students that are still in high school. Previously, a 17-year-old could not have sex with an 18 or 19-year-old. So why are we teaching them about sexuality? Many parents don't want to teach their children how babies are made under the age of teenagers. So why is this allowed? It makes no sense. Thank you.

SPEAKER_08 0:31:01

Thank you. Up next, we have Candy Olson followed by Valerie Tabor.

SPEAKER_03 0:31:28

Thank you so much. I would like a new book policy to be placed on the agenda, please, for next time, since obviously your current book policy does not work and is a total failure. I would like to address what Melissa had said, her comments from last school board meeting about how if you see a pride flag, a flag you don't agree with or you disagree with that person, you just run away. You just go away and you don't talk to them. Melissa, I thought that was really interesting because you expect our children to just run away from their teacher and not talk to their teacher on a daily basis. That seems very strange. I don't think that's possible. And it's offensive to Christians and people who don't wish their children to be around the pride ideology. I don't know how they're supposed to run away from their children and just not talk from their teachers and just not speak to them. Also, I find it concerning that you've totally bought into the whole he, she, they when you're calling a singular person they. That's changing the English language. That's not a thing. You can't call a single person a they. They're not they. They're he or she. So I think that that's a problem if you're trying to change a language that we're all accustomed to using. That's for a plural, like more than one person. Indoctrination. They are being indoctrinated by certain teachers. And maybe you haven't seen it. I believe that could be true because when you're in the classroom, they're not going to talk about controversial subjects. But our children come home and they tell us about what they've heard. I've listened. As you know, I have five children come through this system. and I've listened to them talk to me about all of the things and there are certain teachers that push climate change really hard and they know that climate change is a whole bunch of garbage and we don't believe in that I've had my son in middle school had to write an essay on his white privilege And they don't know where we've come from or how hard we've worked to get where we are. So I think that you should be more careful when you're saying that there's not indoctrination going on. When teachers do have pride flags in their classrooms, that is indoctrination. It is very offensive to Christian families and homes. And a child should not have to sit there in a classroom and have to stare at a flag that is offensive to them. It should be all inclusive. American flag is not offensive to anybody. And everyone should feel comfortable, not just some of the kids feel comfortable. Thank you.

SPEAKER_08 0:34:02

Thank you. Up next, we have Valerie Taylor, followed by Tricia Keeling.

SPEAKER_07 0:34:11

Hello, board. I wanted to speak tonight on two topics, the first being concerns brought up last week regarding the Salinas family counseling. Profanity is neither here nor there for me personally, but allegations that the counseling agency is somehow conspiring to distance students from their family is misleading. As a therapist myself, I wanted to weigh in that these comments about family not being the end-all be-all in terms of social support are meant to support those whose families are not safe. As those of us who work with children know, unfortunately, many families are not safe, which is why we are mandated reporters. The post-reference last meeting are not meant to target healthy family relationships but to emphasize that no person regardless of age or status of biological relationship is required to continue investing in abusive or otherwise unhealthy relationships. So I hope that you will take that into consideration when considering these counseling services. Since I know post COVID, we really need counseling services available to our students for a variety of topics. The second topic that I wanted to talk to the board about is accessibility of these meetings. Having no Zoom option burdens parents with needing to find childcare and needing to have access to transportation. I myself have had to scramble to arrange childcare when I want to attend. And I am privileged enough to have family or friends that are available to watch my child. I have access to a car and it is still difficult for me to attend on various occasions. So I can't imagine what that's like for people that don't have access to a car or don't have family nearby. Um, I also urge the board to consider a closed caption or subtitle option for live viewing to support inclusivity of those who are hard of hearing or have other auditory processing difficulties. That may be an option already, but, uh, as I was looking and watching on live, uh, it was- if it is there, it's very hard to find. So those are my comments. Thank you so much for your time.

SPEAKER_08 0:36:17

Thank you. And our last speaker of the evening is Tricia Keeling.

SPEAKER_06 0:36:28

Hello, my name is Tricia Keeling, I have two kids in this district. I came here tonight to applaud the way you are continuously standing up to hatred, standing for our students, and ignoring the request of a vocal minority who are clearly trying to dismantle the public education system. The majority of these people do not have children in Redland schools. Thank you for your comments on the pride flag being a sign of inclusion and continuing to uphold the civil rights of the students here within this district. Thank you for your dedication to making Redlands schools a safe space for LGBTQ families. I also wanted to say there's been rising incidents of anti-Semitism nationwide and Islamophobia in the wake of what is happening overseas. I'm confident that RUSD will continue to promote inclusion for all students regardless of their faith. I do worry though, I read a book. by an individual who doesn't have kids here, but he keeps coming to Redlands meetings. It's called the dangers of Islamophobia. It's filled with hatred and bigotry. It calls for the deportation of all Muslim families and the eradication of Islamic countries. We at Safe Redlands schools will continue to make the public aware of this sort of hatred. For anyone watching at home, I want to encourage all of you to stand up to this sort of hatred and continue to fight for what is right and just. The author of this book is Lawrence Hebron. He's running for school board. Thank you.

SPEAKER_08 0:37:56

Thank you. Okay, we are moving on to the superintendent's comments. Superintendent Cabral.

SPEAKER_12 0:38:03

Yes, thank you. I just want to provide a couple of points of clarity or actually as a reminder. Definitely, we appreciate parent involvement. We want parents to be as involved with their students as much as they can. We work together to ensure the success of all of our students. I am proud and happy to report the number of volunteers that we have day-to-day at all of our school sites is abundant. We added a new process where we wanted folks to be fingerprinted who are going to be going on any field trips and We're paying for that. We're paying for our volunteers to be fingerprinted and to be fully cleared and And it has not we have not skipped a beat we have many parents hundreds of parents who have come through and gone through the process and are volunteering and are involved in their kids life and that is amazing and we'd love to see that in order to Get more involved. All you need to do is contact the school and If you would like to have access to your child's Records or if you would like to meet with the principal to go over any aspects of your student's education All you need to do is contact the school. I would say making an appointment makes it a whole lot easier for everybody However, many of our principals do take walk-ins. We understand that it's not always possible to make an appointment and so they try to work with our parents however make an appointment of course is going to be better. Another right that you have afforded to you here in Redlands Unified is the ability to let us know by working with the librarians any books that you do not want your child to have access to. And that is something that we have been doing and continue to do. And that is as simple as again contacting the school and letting the librarian know I would like for my child not to have access to these books. If you would like for or if you'd like to be notified if your child tries to check out any book, We can accommodate that also and so We work with parents as much as possible We do have a process that books will go through if there's any questions and that process however We may be criticized for being slow. The process is being carried through and we will continue to do that with any books that come to us that need to go through that review and That's all I have for today. Thank you

SPEAKER_08 0:40:44

Okay, thank you, Mr. Cabral. We'll move on to board member comments. So we'll start on this end, Mrs. Renner, as best you can without your glasses.

SPEAKER_16 0:40:59

First of all, I want to congratulate Kirsten and Jennifer. Welcome. Welcome to your new positions. Over the last couple of weeks, I've had an opportunity to attend a lot of different events in our district. I had a great time at the resource fair at Clark Auditorium. Families in attendance were given food and pajamas, toothbrushes, all kinds of things, and resources to take home if they needed things. And I really love that the Black Student Union and the Hispanic Club from Orange Wood were there promoting all the good things that they're doing on their campus and in their community. The new teacher reception that afternoon was really fun. I enjoyed meeting some of our new teachers. And I always enjoy the mural judging at RHS. That was fun. I got there last and I think I broke a tie. So I don't actually know who won, but they said they were glad I came because they were waiting for me. And going to the RHS homecoming game was fun. and then the rev game. Even though both schools lost, it still was fun. On the 17th, we had another great superintendent's awards at RHS. Melissa and I were there and won and Ken and who else? Jason. Jason was there too. That was a lot of fun. I want to thank everyone who helped make that possible. I really enjoy celebrating all our students and I think their families do too. Last week, I was able to participate in a parent university workshop put on by our face team. Anthony and Lorena, they're wonderful and I want to thank them for all their hard work in developing these workshops. And I want to thank Juanita and Sonia too for allowing that to come into our district. And a sincere thank you to Wendy McClung. She's from CRI-ROP and I want to thank her for the presentation that she did on ROP, what's happening in RUSD. 25 families participated on a Zoom call early in the day, and then eight families participated in person that evening. Everyone enjoyed hearing about the different classes that are offered at our schools. There were a few students there that were interested in taking a class second semester, as well as into next school year, they're juniors. I wasn't exactly sure, I just directed them to speak with their counselor at their school to see if they could get in second semester. Um, yesterday, went to Victoria. They had their very own pumpkin patch for preschool through kindergarten. The children were so excited to pick their pumpkin from the newly constructed kindergarten playground. It looks beautiful. And we even got a tour of the Garner Holt Lab. Uh, thank you, Karen Burke, for taking the time out of your day to walk us around through there. And I wanna thank Mrs. Patel, the principal at Victoria, for the invitation. And I'm looking forward to all the fall festivals and parades at all our schools, uh, in the next few weeks. and also looking forward to softball coming up starting next week and Just want to let everyone know a new nonprofit has started here in town It's called the healthy East Valley drug free coalition and it's comprised of Redlands, Yucaipa Highland and Mentone The main focus is to work together to reduce underage drug use in our East Valley community so if anybody would like to attend any of the meetings there the third Friday of the month and Behind Theron's and the board in the meeting room. If you're interested you can contact me And I just want to thank everybody again who came to speak tonight We really take your concerns and what you say to heart. So I hope everyone has a good evening.

SPEAKER_08 0:44:28

SPEAKER_05 0:44:47

I too enjoyed the murals over at Redlands High School. I do have to say during Honkman Week that the seniors was pretty impressive. It was pretty outstanding. That was great. Congratulations to Jennifer and welcome to Mr. Shaw. I know it's not unfamiliar to you here because we used to come before and when you were with Edie to be able to see and give the presentation on the interim. Welcome back. It's like home for you, welcome back a little. So welcome. I want to congratulate Coach Comandina and Coach Glasson on their CBL and their excellent year that they had. And then also looking forward, I will be speaking at the optimist on Thursday along with Mr. Cabral. So just looking forward to the optimists are always doing a lot for us and then we'll have our optimist day, civics day next week with them. So we thank them. and then Just any golfer so the redlands bowl golf tournament for the redlands bowl proceeds is saturday the 28th at arrowhead country club If you would like to participate, please Reach out to the redlands bowl and I want to thank a colleague Mr. Jim O'neill who'll be golfing that day so thank you for supporting the redlands bowl because we do give a lot of programs during the summer And then on a personal note, I know that we're winding down to the end of breast cancer awareness month. We are down to the end of the month, but I do want to let everyone know to please continue to have your loved ones screened for mammograms, and it's really important. Remember, it's not just women, it's also men as well. And on that, I was able to pass my marker of my tenure last week, and so I remember being here 10 years ago when I was going through everything. I know there's a lot of people here that I can look at who have been through the journey that I have. So keep fighting the fight, everyone, and we'll be right behind you. Thanks. Thank you, Patty.

SPEAKER_08 0:46:55

Congratulations. Go ahead, Jim.

SPEAKER_13 0:46:59

Thank you, Madam President. Well, a shout-out, of course, to Sean Comendina. You know, he took a leave of absence from his coaching career, came right back, and just continued to help those tennis stars excel. So another great year for him, another trophy on the shelf. And, of course, Jennifer with the golf team. I'm very partial to the golf team. Nobody mentioned Kareen and the RHS volleyball team. So, there's an undefeated season for them, again, which is pretty amazing. So, congratulations to the sports programs there at RHS, they're stellar. Michelle, did you know that Wendy with the ROP program, that her husband is one of our assistant principals? Yes, OK. I didn't know if you knew that or not over at Mission. I'm sorry I wasn't able to attend the second superintendent awards program, but I saw you two ladies were there. And I did get some very positive feedback from several people who I happen to know that your kids were honored in some way. Number two in the books. Well done. It's a great thing. And yes, I am playing golf Saturday. I'm glad it's the best ball because I'm going to need all the help I can get out there. But looking forward to it. Ken Morris today, our facilities director, he gave a presentation at Kiwanis. And I'm here to tell you, Jason, that he did an outstanding job I spoke about the projects that we have going on in the district. He's a busy guy and everything that's going on with our new center over there and all the things that are going to happen. So exciting times for that, certainly. So I just wanted to pass on. I was very proud of him. He did a great job. It was a tough crowd, too. Our new employee is Jennifer. Didn't hear good things about the steamed hamburgers, but the rest of the menu is fantastic, OK? So I haven't tried one of those steamed hamburgers. I need to. Everybody says, you know, jury's out on that, but I'm going to give it a shot. And Kirsten, thank you for coming tonight and look forward to your service here in the district. You've got a tough job. We really appreciate it. I think that's enough tonight. Thank you.

SPEAKER_08 0:49:32

Thank you, Mr. O'Neil. I just want to say thank you to Carrie Anne and Christine and Mr. Cabral for a fantastic Superintendent's Awards. It was a lot faster this time, thanks to that step and repeat. So I didn't realize how much time we spent walking back and forth, but that was fantastic. I really love that, and we do get a lot of great feedback from families, so that's fantastic. It's nice for the parents to have a special night where they can come and see their children get recognized for all their hard work. I also want to throw out a little reminder that this Friday is a smudge pot. Thursday, excuse me, oh my gosh. Thursday, yes. It is an intense game. Everybody, you know, intense game between Rev and RHS and it's liable to cause some, you know, good old-fashioned rivalry and I just want to make sure that everybody either comes out if we get families to come out and if you're not going to attend and your children are maybe please have a conversation about safety because there's a lot of feelings and teenagers get you know feeling a certain way and we just want to make sure that everybody's safe and everybody's having a good time there. So yeah just yeah go Terriers. Sorry about that. Um, all right. And I will adjourn this meeting at 6.55. Everyone get home safe and thank you for coming out tonight.
