Alrighty. Congratulations. Okay. Public participation. Any more cards? Okay. This is the time that any member of the public may address the board on anything that falls under the jurisdiction of the Board of Education provided the person submits a completed registration card to address the board form to the clerk of the board or his or her designee prior to the time of the chairperson calls the item for the board's consideration. This is not meant to be a debating period. Complaints and problems relating to policy matters will be deferred to the superintendent. The person wishing to address the board shall, when recognized by the chairperson of the board, step up to the podium microphone and announce his or her name. The chairperson shall, in the interest of facilitating the business of the board, limit the amount of time which a member of the public may use in addressing the board to three minutes unless the chairperson or a majority of the board determines a different limit is appropriate. Okay. First person up, we have Mr. Broom. This is on the agenda item.
Okay, now I have two different slips I've submitted, one for general public comment and one also for the agenda item 19.
Yeah, I have you down.
So this would be general comment. Go ahead. Okay, yes, school board trustees and Superintendent Cabral. I wanted to bring to your attention something that was brought to the attention of the Redlands City Council this last school city council meeting. And it was brought to the attention of the city council regarding by a Redlands Police Officer Association leader named Jeff Frisch. who informed the public about a gay pride event which took place on Saturday, June 29th on West State Street in Redlands. At one of the booths, children as young as three years old with the supervision of adults were encouraged to color pages with anti-police rhetoric and images depicting violence against police. This included pages, and I'm just gonna show you, this is a flyer from the event, including pages such as the following. No Cops at Pride, and this shows a burning police car. The other coloring page that was there was be gray and do crime. And you can see kind of a collection of bricks that are all laid out there. And so the question would be is why is this relevant to the school board? Well, the Pride Resource Fair was sponsored by a group, CNC Center for Healing. on State Street there, and Assemblywoman Eloise Gomez Reyes. A number of local LGBT advocacy groups, including members of Safe Redland Schools, were present, as well as Redland City Councilwomen, Denise Davis, Janet Guzman-Lowry, and Redland's Unified School Board Trustees, Alex Vara and Melissa Ayala Quintero. And here's just a picture from that event, you can see. But in the event, More significantly is that none of the organizers or the elected officials made any effort to shut down this activity. This is nothing short of a sick and demonic grooming of children to become LGBT violent activists and anarchists who will torch police cars, throw bricks at windows of public buildings, or private property. It communicates to kids that the police are anti-LGBT, discriminatory, and unwelcome. It says that it's okay to commit crimes to advocate for your gay agenda. I publicly challenge the school board president Alex Vara and fellow trustee Melissa Ayala Quintera and our two city council women to disavow this activity and dissociate from the LGBT activist groups responsible for this activity. If you fail to do so, how can we trust you to protect our children against a teacher, a rogue teacher, who decides that they're going to try to introduce these coloring pages or this kind of rhetoric in our classrooms? We need that assurance that you are not anti-police. Thank you.
All right, you can go ahead and stay up there. On the agenda item, go ahead.
We can do it later. You want it done now? I'd like to address the school board regarding agenda item 19A, I believe that's his, Roman numerator 19A. And it is regarding the issue of, let me get my notes here. For several years now, the Redlands Unified has been promoting Pride Month on social media in June using the gay pride flag and the transgender flag and the gay pride rainbow. These are a few of such of those posts that have been placed. This was one in 2022 and more recently one here in 2024. The public has a number of legitimate questions that we'd like the Redland school board administration and school board trustees to address. What is the purpose and the educational value of even having a pride month? Why are LGBT pride symbols and flags being used to promote pride month on social media? Do these symbols not promote homosexuality and transgenderism to our students and their parents? Why should our taxpayer dollars be used to promote these behaviors? Why should Redlands Unified School District have to celebrate or take pride in homosexual or transgender behavior? If the goal is actually to promote school pride or DEI, why can't this be done or achieved in a non-partisan fashion without using divisive symbols such as the gay pride flag or the gay pride rainbow? And couldn't it be done in a different month than the month of June? Has the school board even voted on this or approved this issue? Yes, we want our schools to be inclusive of all students. And we can do this without necessarily forcing people to endorse a behavior that they don't agree with or to endorse special interest groups over one over another. All it does is it creates division and it creates problems in the community. And it should not be tolerated also in the workplace or in the public schools because it is a form of sexual harassment in many ways. Yes, we want our schools to be inclusive but this can be done without using these symbols. And I want you to be aware that the 2022 United States Supreme Court decision of Shurtleff and City versus City of Boston and how it relates to this very issue. If a school board displays a flag and a symbol of one special interest group, it must display other special interest groups to guarantee freedom of speech for all. Therefore, you cannot exclude Christian symbols at Christmas, Muslim symbols at Ramadan, Star of David at Passover. So I urge the school board to remain neutral on this to abandon promotion of Gay Pride Month on social media and any internal or external district communication. The school district can be tolerant and non-discriminatory without actively endorsing one group over another. Thank you.
um... It wasn't too long ago when attending a rally where children were giving out coloring books of burning police cars and assaulting police officers would get someone from a local city council or school board or higher political office, say, a Senate or congressman, It wasn't too long ago when attending such a rally would have people calling for you to resign and for your political career to be essentially over. I am therefore calling for Melissa Ayala-Cantaro and Alex Vara and Denise Davis and Jenna Guzman-Lowry, but they're not here, to either renounce The activities of Safe Red Wind schools that happened last week renounce giving coloring books to children as young as three years old, depicting burning police cars and throwing rocks at police and stabbing them and stuff like that. Renounce it or resign, because this is unacceptable. Also, Police, they deserve our respect. Without the police, crime goes up. We can't have calls for the Second Amendment to be disbanned while at the same time calling for cops to be disbanned, then police and then criminals overrun. My good friend Jesus Cerranos, he was supposed to come here today, but he didn't because someone An LGBTQ plus activist or group of activists dumped cat litter and dog poop on his front lawn. This is a clear intimidation tactic. They're probably trying to get him to drop out of the race or something for city council. This is a clear intimidation tactic and it should not be happening in our society. It's unacceptable. The intimidation tactics clearly come from one side of the political arena, the left. Of course, the right always gets accused of engaging in such behavior, but the left is the one doing it, and then they gaslight people into thinking that the right is doing it when they're the ones doing it. It's the tactic of Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's PR commander and chief information officer. Always accuse your enemies of what you yourself are doing. That's a tactic, that's out of the playbook of the Nazis and it's what the left always does.
Go ahead and stay up there Joshua. Go ahead.
What am I talking on now? Oh, the agenda item. What is the agenda item? Oh, at the last city council meeting, right, is this the agenda item?
Oh, social media promotion.
Yeah, social media should not be promoting LGBTQ plus pride. I don't have problems with people engaging in that behavior on their own time, but social media should not be encouraging it. Children shouldn't have access to it. It's dangerous. I wouldn't want children to have access to, I don't think children should be given the down low on the dynamics of traditional heterosexual relationships until they've at least hit puberty, so that we shouldn't be teaching them the dynamics of alternate sexual lifestyles.
Thank you. Lawrence Hebron.
Good evening, my name is Lawrence Hebron, I live in area three of the Redland School District. Tonight, among other things, we are discussing the wisdom of designating a gay pride month. Wisdom certainly is something we must expect indeed demand from our public administrators, like the trustees who sit on the school board. Personally though, I have to question the wisdom of this policy which celebrates homosexuality. Diversity, equity, and inclusion have become guiding principles of many political and community leaders. Indeed, these are noble sounding objectives, but you need to be wise in how you attempt these goals. By celebrating homosexuality, you thumb your nose at those who adhere to three of the planet's greatest religions, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Is that wise? Is that inclusive? By celebrating homosexuality, you are encouraging behaviors that result in a much higher suicide rate than among heterosexuals. A report published in the American Journal of Psychiatry just one year ago in June of 2023 showed that gay men and lesbians were more than twice as likely to attempt suicide than heterosexual men and women, and that bisexuals were nearly three times as likely to attempt suicide as heterosexuals. A Danish study publicized on CNN found that trans people attempted suicide at a rate 7.7 times greater than the rest of the population. So is it wise to celebrate behaviors that increase the chance of self-destructive activities? A study published by the National Institutes for Health on an official government website noted that alcohol and drug abuse also substantially increase the likelihood of suicide. You wouldn't celebrate drug and alcohol abuse among children, would you? Of course not. In fact, through red ribbon week activities, you try to discourage these destructive behaviors. So why do you celebrate homosexuality, which also increases the likelihood of suicide? The people of this community, especially our parents and grandparents, are entitled to expect you to rise above the shifting winds of contemporary politics, especially if those winds blow our children into dangerous areas. Don't disappoint us. Stick to the basics. Stay away from politicizing our kids. The Redlands Unified School District is not supposed to be your personal game room for dabbling in unorthodox, unconventional, and unwanted policies. And if you can't do that, don't expect to stay in those seats much longer. Thank you for your consideration.
Thank you. The next speaker, Susan McCarley.
Good evening, my name is Susan McCarley and I wanted to speak again about agenda item 19A. What I see here tonight is ongoing pusillanimity in regards to the safety and nurturing of our children. They're continuing to be put in harm's way in regard to grooming by sexually explicit material and other forms of brainwashing. I'm wondering what happened to the celebration for Flag Day on June 14th when we celebrate the inception of a flag that is inclusive of all of us. Gay, straight, men, woman, child, every person living within the boundaries of America. It seems it was overlooked in the zealous celebration of people of the same sex having sex with each other. Since when does one's sexuality take precedence over citizenship in the most sought after country in the world? Thank you.
Thank you. Next speaker, Jeanette Wilson.
Hi, thanks for having us. My name's Jeanette Wilson and I wanted to talk about the agenda item. And I would really like to see the school district get away from political agendas and get back to excellence in education. And I think social media is a great way to help promote that with students and families and community members who do pay the taxes for the school district to be able to operate. The basic goal of Gay Pride Month is to celebrate the fact that someone has a certain sexual preference with the same sex, bottom line. So parents have even asked me, when are we going to have heterosexual month? When are we going to celebrate virginity month? Why not use social media in a more positive way something that's educational such as Independence Day, I didn't see anything about Independence Day for our country the gay pride Stuff is still on the website. Nothing about Independence Day How about Hispanic Heritage Month? 53% of our students are Hispanic Wouldn't that be a great? month to celebrate, Mother's Day. There's so many other areas that technological day that could be celebrated, that could enhance and build up everyone's knowledge and understanding of the world. So that's what I would like to see happen and pick topics that would include all the children, all the families, all the time. Thank you.
Michael Pazner.
Hello, Michael Pazner. Regarding the coloring pages that was discussed here, I want to make clear, one, I don't condone violence or calls for violence, but I also want to point out that there was a lot of false accusations both online and here tonight Safe Redlands schools did not provide that coloring page. And a lot of other groups, yourselves included, have been falsely accused of things you are not responsible for. And I want it noted that a lot of people recognize that and know who is spreading these lies that we've heard tonight. Regarding the Redlands Police Officers Association's statement, I support police. I've always had great interactions with police. But I put out there that the RPOA engaged in a political stunt that evening, and they didn't live up to their ideals. Online, when they have been mocked, ridiculed, questioned, traditionally they take the high road, inviting people to engage with them, let's talk, let's build bridges. They didn't do that for the pride community in this event. And it should be noted that they did not live up to their ideals. They treated the pride community differently. And it's very sad that they did not live up to their ideals. Regarding Pride Month for the month of June, people should remember that it was in June 1969, the Stonewall uprising happened, when people said we had enough of being treated unfairly, of police enforcing unjust laws, people being criminalized just for being who they are. That is why Pride Month is in June, to remember that historic event, and for many people, Pride Month is more important to them than July 4th, because that's when they started to be able to be who they are. It's an important historic event, and it should be remembered and celebrated. But their fight isn't done. Hundreds of laws are still on the books limiting their rights, and in some places, more laws limiting their rights are being introduced. The Pride community is among the most targeted groups in America today, and that hatred and discrimination is part of a political agenda we've seen play out here. We've seen hate speech in both school board and city council meetings, often pre-faced with I have gay friends before hatred and lies are spewed, as we saw here this evening. I just urge you to continue celebrating Pride Month because some members of the community dearly need it. Thank you.
Thank you. Beatrix Williams.
Hello, my name is Beatrix Williams. I am an incoming 12th grader at Redlands High School. I am a member of Redlands Youth Council and the Redlands High Mental Advocate Club. I serve as an advocacy leader. I wanted to start off by thanking the superintendent, the school board president, and the school board for allowing this opportunity for public comment. I'm here today to commend RHS along with my peers and on the resources that RHS and other schools have provided for mental health. These include case counselors, online all day psychiatrists that serve all week long in our school communities. and events that RHS has allowed us to hold at school. As part of Mental Health Advocate Club, we have been able to host mental health fairs and participate in Friday Night Live conferences that help advocate for the mental health in our school and community. We believe that it is incredibly important to educate others on mental health and promote a strong community for students. Thank you for your time.
Good job Beatrix. Love our full lobby.
Good evening, Student Board Trustee and Superintendent Cabral. My name is Lava Falabi. I am also an incoming 12th grader from Redlands East Valley High School. I am a part of Redlands Youth Council, LCAP Student Advisory Panel, and the Mental Health Club at my school of which I am president. I am also here with my peers from RHS, and we are here to discuss the topic of mental health. I've been very passionate about mental health advocacy for a while. So leading my club at school allows me to be able to pursue that passion by educating others, eradicating the stigma surrounding mental health, and providing resources for people to turn to. This is why I am very grateful to the school board for providing resources such as the Wellness Center at Redlands East Valley, alongside the clinical psychiatrist on our campus. These resources have been extremely beneficial to several students on our campus, especially those who may not have the opportunity to access these resources on their own. At our wellness center, there are a variety of activities for students to engage in. It hosts a variety of mindfulness activities for all students all over campus. And our on-campus clinician has also seen and worked with several students over the school year who have benefited greatly from her time. Thank you so much for your time.
Berlin? Am I saying it right? Berlin? Gillian?
Good evening, my name is Riley Guillen and I am the president of the Mental Health Advocate Club at Redlands High School and I have been for two years now. So today we want to talk about the importance of mental health and just want to express our gratitude for sustaining these resources for our school campuses, both at REV and Redlands High School. I started the club with the intention of creating a safe space and discussing mental health as a focus group with students. A huge part about sharing that space is allowing for the diversity of students and their perspectives in the conversations surrounding mental health, mental health care, and accessibility. There are students who come from so many different backgrounds like immigrant households, from places like Bangladesh, Argentina, the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Mexico, and also students of all identities who are a part of the LGBTQ plus community and as well experience many hardships but are able to talk about it within the club. Cultural responsibility has been a huge part of the Mental Health Advocate Club and it's been a great opportunity for students to come in and feel safe and heard for all of their issues and struggles that they've lived and their own lived experiences. So we want to thank you for being leaders and for allowing us to have these spaces and just have them open for students who struggle and don't have anywhere else to go other than the places that Love and I have opened for these students. And so really, we're here just to allow everyone to see that there are students who actually do utilize mental health resources, do need them, and the school board is here to meet those needs of the students. And therefore, we are here to express our voices and to be vulnerable with you guys today, just to let you know that We see what you do and we do pay attention to what the school board does for us. And so we want to thank you.
Thank you.
Hello, school board members and trustees and superintendent Cabral. My name is Nayada Modro and I'm an incoming senior at Redlands High School. I am the vice president of the Mental Health Advocate Club at my school, the Friday Night Live chapter president and part of El Cap as well. I'm incredibly passionate about mental health and as it is a lived experience for myself and my peers. And I would first like to thank you all for the resources the district provides for our schools and communities. It is helping many students. I would like to continue to expand on these supports as my peers have also said. as sometimes students can fall between the cracks. I think that there should be a focus on these topics as it not only affects individuals, families, but also our academics and communities. I hope to see the continuing of these resources being expanded and we hope to continue to get involved with this topic as it is something incredibly important to students and peers. Thank you.
Roger Umansky.
Good evening. My name is Roger Umansky. I'm the CEO for Citrus Counseling Services. So I was here to talk about item 8G. And before I make my official comments, I just want to say I think it's very heartening to see these young people and how articulate and bright they are. And I think that their parents in this school district should be very proud of turning out to students like this. So just had some brief comments about this item. First off, I wanted to say thank you very much for allowing us to be a partner with the school district and the great people that you have working here to be able to make sure that we can provide behavioral health services to students as quickly as possible and make sure that gets expedited. Second thing, I wanted to let you know that my team is incredibly pleased with the coordination and the cooperation that we get in coordinating services with your staff, especially Rachel Malatesta, Marissa Boettcher, and Adam Spies. They're just fantastic to work with. And lastly, I just wanted to let you know that I think this contract is a really good value for the Redlands Unified School District. For the last two years, 80% and 90% of the therapy services, those costs have actually been covered by other contracts and funding sources that CCS has. So thank you very much. I'm going to be here in case you guys have any questions about the contract. Thanks.
Okay, next we move on to student trustee reports. We have no students today, so we're going to go on to board committee reports. Does anyone have anything they would like to report? Melissa?
Okay.
Jim, do you have anything after Melissa?
Let's see, I'm just trying to go over and make sure that we have, let's see. Career readiness specialists and parent community involvement specialists participated in RUSD multicultural fair. Our RHS high school, after school nurse assistant certified program completed their training and clinical hours and sat for the CDPH state certification test. REV, the REV digital video production pathway with ASB hosted their second annual film festival. So that was wonderful. RHS certified medical assistant pathways will have 18 students hosted by Redlands Community Hospital for a clinical internship, I believe. Has that already happened? Let's see. I think that's it, but I know that there are still job openings that CRIROP is looking for. I just saw one the other day, but they have plenty open, so if you are looking, please head over to the CRIROP website for more information.
Thank you. Nothing for you, Jim, right? OK, now we go on to board comments. I'll start off with Jim.
Thank you. Well, just a quick comment. Fourth of July celebration, we worked the Kiwanis refreshment booth, if you will call it that. It's all soft drinks and Gatorades and things. We raised money for the scholarships that we give away to students that graduate. This year I was joined by a team, the Citrus Valley High School Key Club Executive Board, worked in the heat with the crowds. We'll see, it was Trinity, Vincent, Kayla, and Kaylin. And they did an outstanding job. They worked hard. There was a lot of people. We sold over 3,000 or 2,500 drinks. at the booth, and we were able to raise some serious money for the scholarship. So it was great. Unfortunately, the fireworks had a glitch, software problem. They obviously weren't using our computers. They're on computers. And it got cut a little bit short. But it started off like, wow, bigger and better than ever, and then dark. But that was sad. But by that time, we'd sold all our drinks. So we were OK. So thank you. That's all I have tonight. All righty. Patty?
Thank you. I just want to say thank you for our students from RHS and REV coming out today. It pleases me that we've got incoming seniors who can come out and speak in a meeting like this. It's not very easy, so I commend you for coming out and hearing your voice and coming out and defending what you believe in. And I'm glad that we're able to help you. And they just want to remind everybody, you know, the bowl is going on Tuesday and Friday nights And tonight is Marty Stewart and his fabulous app relatives Which is someone who used to be long and play with the Johnny Cash band, so it'll be great. Hope to see you there. Thanks
I really don't have anything, but I want to thank our students for coming out and speaking today. I know it can be pretty intimidating, but you guys did a fantastic job. So it's Niara, Beatrix, Bryland, and Lev. You did an amazing job. Thank you.
Good evening everybody. I hope everyone's having a great summer. Just wanted to also thank all the speakers today. Thanks for coming out in the heat and on a summer night to come and speak with what you're passionate about. I went to the resource, I mean the summer meals kickoff about a week and a half ago. It was really fun. I hope you all got a chance to go. A lot of community and county organizations were there to help families in different areas. There was dentists, um, food. There was a smoothie place. There was food for everybody. Everybody could come get lunch. It was really fun. Uh, so I got to meet a few families, um, and that's what I've been doing. But I also am really happy to see this many people on a summer night at a board meeting. So thank you all for coming. And I want to congratulate all our new hires. I'm so excited to- to see you all in action.
Thank you Back in 2016 when I originally ran to become a school board member before I ran there were approximately three suicides in 2016 I want to say between March and April and that's one of the primary reasons that I ran because I wanted to make sure that we had enough mental health services for our students and As soon as I began shortly after that the district had already put in place the case carrier programs and additional counselors I know that Now what we need is additional therapists Because I don't know if you guys know about the rules regarding the counselors but counselors can only counsel students six times and After that, they need to be referred to therapists. So those are some of the things we're looking into and we want to improve because we know that after six sessions, it might not fix the situation. And that's why we have other groups that we work with and support us. All four of you ladies did an amazing job of coming up and talking and being vulnerable and thank you for sharing your thoughts and everything that we've been doing to help our students. It means a lot, especially coming from students because all we do is focus on the needs of our students. So thank you again, ladies. Regarding the celebrations that we have and that we celebrate, we celebrate on our social media, we post almost everything. For example, Flag Day, we talk about Independence Day. Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate that during the month of September and part of October. So, you know, Black History Month during the month of September, we celebrate February, when I say September, I'm sorry, February, yeah. Yeah. So, we celebrate and we're inclusive of everybody. As a board member, we have to realize that we need to include everybody. We need to include everybody. We don't get, as a board member, we should not get to pick and choose who we support. We support all students, no matter what race, no matter what religion, no matter what you look like. We love and support all of our students and we will continue to do so. And then as far as the police, as back in 2016, we didn't have any police resource officers at our campuses. It was one of the things that I said I was going to do and change and part of the board that was here Jim and Patty, we were able to vote and agree that we needed police officers on our campuses and we recently just added another resource officer for the middle school. So we're not against police officers. We know that they're a vital people that serve our community and we are going to continue to have them help us and support us because they are of a great benefit to our students as well. They get to build those relationships with our students. And I just want to give a shout out to all of the teachers we on I know that many of the teachers are currently on vacation But we know that they are working tirelessly to redoing and updating their lesson plans and going through their curriculum pacing guides and Being a teacher is a non-stop. They they're enjoying their summer, but I guarantee that many of them are also attending conferences and they're also Working on their lesson plans and doing as much as they can to prepare For the new upcoming school year and that's all the comments I have Next is the superintendent's report
Thank you. Yes. Good evening. Good evening, everyone. First, I'll start by saying welcome to Dr. Wilson. Welcome to the team. I look forward to working with you. We're excited to have you. You are absolutely going to love the community that you're about to start serving. And so welcome to the team. And to our new assistant principal, Ms. Davi, welcome. And also to Mr. Maddock I'm gonna get it Can't wait for you to start a lot of good things happening this summer I want to talk about summer school because we forget we do have kids going to school right now And I want to make sure we acknowledge all of our staff that have been working hard all summer long to get kids You know up to speed on some credits Also, we have some summer grads some some of our kids ended the school year about five to ten credits short And they're getting those done at summer school. So thank you to dr. Rehage who's the principal summer school is doing a great job over there Starting this week the redlands emergency services academy begins and many of our students over at the u of r are going to spend the week getting training on Police strategies and fire strategies. I'm looking forward to seeing some of that hopefully in the next couple of days some of the events And corporal meet has done a great job from Redlands Police Department helping us organize that for our kids I'll be participating in a superintendent's panel tomorrow at the U of R. I look forward to that. Thank you for the invitation U of R and And I can't forget because Carrie Ann will probably Uh, yes throw something.
Thank you jim Uh, we received the proposals.
Oh, so the proposals from the district to rta and respa as far as our negotiations proposals have been the board has been The board has received those proposals and we will have a public hearing in our meeting in august regarding those proposals Okay, have a great rest of your summer everybody. Thank you for the time All right.
So now we're going to move on to um
Thank you.
We're going to move on to business service consent items. Is there a motion to approve item 13A, consent items B through AE?
So moved. Second.
Yeah, Patty and Michelle? Okay. Discussion?
I'm happy to have a partnership with our counseling. It's great, thank you.
I had a question. How many, um, mental health service centers are we utilizing at this time?
There's up to three.
And approximately how many students are we serving roughly?
For me to say right now. Um, probably at each center between 50 to 100. Oh, okay. I'm thinking.
Okay.

All those in favor say aye. Aye. Chair votes aye and so ordered. So now we're on to discussion items. Holidays and recognition. This agenda item gives the board an opportunity to discuss the holidays and recognitions we promote throughout the school year via social media outlets and our website. Superintendent Juan, can you give us more information on this topic?
Yes What we've provided is a copy that looks like this that should be in front of you. There's also copies I believe in the back if anybody wants to grab one and it what this has is in the 23 24 school year every recognition and holiday that we recognized in our social media outlets and on our website to kind of help with the discussion What you can see is a consistency as far as everything that we have recognized with a couple of things one is They're not only represented on our website, but they're also represented on Instagram Twitter not as much as Instagram is but everybody gets one post and sometimes school sites will also represent in different ways a different recognition or certain recognitions and they may also be posted on our district website or I should say our district social media outlet and so you may get one or two different posts But I wouldn't say that any specific recognition gets more than any other and this is Generally speaking and if you look at the list, it's a pretty comprehensive list that takes you through the school year beginning In July is when it all starts with 4th of July and then all the way through June and You can confirm it by going on our Instagram page and seeing every single post that is represented on this list. And so I thought that that would be a good way for everybody to see what we do promote as a school district. And the board can then have a discussion with that information.
Thank you. Anybody have any comments? Go ahead.
Just looking of the 49. I think it's about 49 celebrations that we do The one in June is the only one that has sexual connotation to it. That's what I can't wrap my head around That's it's hard for me with kids.
That's hard for me And should we do away with red ribbon week because it has drug connotation I
That's an ad campaign for not doing drugs.
As is Pride Month. It's an attempt to promote positivity and tolerance and acceptance.
But I also see it as asexual.
And I can understand that. And I can see that, but that is how you're seeing it. Um, I can also see Red River Week as calling attention to drugs. And maybe there are kids that are not even thinking about it, but because now we are talking about it, maybe we are drawing attention.
That's prob- that's probably true. That is probably true.
Okay. I did. I was on my phone a little bit because I was looking up to make sure because I know I've seen posts for Hispanic Heritage Month and other. The one I actually really like is Constitution and Citizenship Day. I actually really like that one. So thank you for including that one. But I did- I did- I scrolled through the Instagram and I made sure that we were recognizing everyone because in our district, we have 30 different language spoken in our homes. And I feel like it is important not only that our staff represent, um, reflect our students so that they can see themselves having a future not only, um, as contributing citizens to, you know, the community, but, um, in our district and hopefully that, you know, when they go out and they find their career, some of them might even come back. Um, but I really do think it is important that our students see themselves not only in our staff, but that we recognize them. And although we may not agree with it, not everyone may agree with it, Um, pride is an important month for a lot of students. It may not be important to everybody, but it is for some. And it is important that we recognize them. And being a board member, sometimes we don't all get along. Sometimes we have arguments and sometimes we make decisions that, um, are not in our personal, um, wheelhouse, but are for the greater good of all our students. And that's what matters. And I hope that we remember that when we are criticizing others, um, that, you know, sometimes our words hit, um, those we don't intend to. So we're up here saying things and we are, you know, we're public figures, so we're kind of open to that, but our students are not. And sometimes when we say things, um, in front of our kids, it matters and it hurts. So I would just ask everyone to remember that.
Mine's more in the form of a question. Is there a process for making a request to have something put on our observance calendar?
We've had in the past community members, staff members, some of our administrators reach out to my office, reach out to our communications department with requests to include certain things that maybe we are not including and we honor it at times. It depends on what the request is. But I would say, I would urge anybody who would want something added, or in this case, if it's something you want deleted, I mean, you would go through my office, go through communications, and we would look to see how we would move forward.
than a committee that evaluates or is it just your decision?
No, what we typically use and you can see it on this form in the notes on the right, the California Department of Education makes recommendations on what should or could be recognized on a monthly basis and we generally stay within that arena. What is recognized by the CDE is something that we would support generally speaking. Uh, no, it's on there. Yeah. Oh, it's at the top Oh, there it is first one And in uh specifically in june there's several there's a few National flag day was was something that was recognized and juneteenth along with pride month And there was a summer break post also
I want to read something off of the internet because Mr. Pazner came up and spoke about it, but I hope this summarizes what Pride Month is about. So Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, LGBT Pride Month is celebrated annually in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Riots and works to achieve equal justice, equal justice, and equal opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning LGBTQ Americans. In June of 1969, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn In New York City, staged an uprising to resist the police harassment and prosecution to which LGBT Americans were commonly subjected. The uprising marks the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against LGBT Americans. Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia, and concerts. And LGBT Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact of LGBTQ individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally. and local policies and practices are increasingly acknowledging and focusing on LGBTQ youth and numerous national advocacy for other organizations are also giving greater attention to LGBTQ youth in their work, encouraging greater acceptance, encouraging greater acceptance and support of all youth. including those who are or are perceived to be LGBTQ, will make communities, schools, and other settings safe, better places for all youth. Those are all my comments. All right. Any other comments? Okay, meeting adjourned at 708.
