BP 0415 — Equity
The Redlands Board of Education believes that the diversity that exists among the district's community of students, staff, families, and community members is integral to the district's vision, mission, and goals. Addressing the needs of diverse populations requires recognition of the inherent value of diversity and acknowledgement that educational excellence requires a commitment to equity both in the opportunities provided to students and the resulting outcomes.
Historically, populations that have been underserved--meaning those who have not been provided the same opportunities nor have had the same resulting outcomes-- include, but are not limited to, students who identify as any of the following or the intersectionality thereof: Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), English learners, foster youth, homeless, LGBTQ+, low-income, students with exceptionalities.
The Board shall develop policies and the superintendent shall implement procedures and protocols to promote equity in district programs and activities through measures such as the following:
Assessing student needs based on publicly available and internal data disaggregated by race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, language, students with disabilities, geographical area, and socioeconomic status to enable equity-focused policy, planning, and resource development decisions.
Analyzing expenditures and allocating resources in a manner that provides all students with equitable access to district programs, support services, and opportunities for success that promote equity and inclusion in the district.
Adopting curricular and instructional materials that accurately reflect diversity among students including a robust ethnic studies course offering.
Promoting the recruitment, employment, and retention of a diverse staff that reflects the student demographics of the community.
Providing staff with ongoing, research-based professional development on culturally responsive instructional practices.
Conducting program evaluations that include equity as a focus when reviewing and addressing academic outcomes for all students.
Providing parent/guardian involvement opportunities and including them in the decision-making, implementation, and program evaluation process. The district shall establish an equity advisory group to assist the district in implementing practices and procedures that promote and plan for these equity measures.
Equity Advisory Council
The District shall form an Equity Advisory Council to assist the district in implementing practices and procedures that promote and plan for equity measures.
The purpose of this council will be to ensure that a representative group of site and district stakeholders will have the opportunity to review, provide feedback, and help plan the district’s implementation of and progress toward meeting its equity measures.
Representatives from this council shall be responsible for sharing and presenting information about progress toward meeting the district’s equity measures between school sites and the district, and with district staff and the school board as appropriate.
Equity Advisory Council Members should include:
Site administrators
Certificated Teachers
Classified Support Personnel
Parents/guardians of students reflecting the diversity of the district’s student population, with special consideration to groups underrepresented according to academic proficiency.
