BP 7310 — Naming Of Facility
When a school, individual building, or facility is to be named, the Superintendent shall appoint a screening committee that will be comprised of the Superintendent, or his representative, as chairperson, a principal, and at least three other community members and/or students. Community members, students, school personnel, and board members may submit names for consideration by the committee. After completing the review process, the committee will make a final recommendation to name a school, individual building or facility to the Board of Education for final approval.
Criteria for Naming Schools
Schools may be named for a person and may include presidents or governors, statesmen and heroes of national and state fame; national and local educators, community and civic leaders who have been retired from public service for at least three years. In addition, schools may be named for geographic locations.
The following criteria applies:
Provide details related to the naming, including the building, grounds, or facility involved and the duration for which the name shall be in effect.
Prohibit any person, name, message, image, or other depiction that advocates or endorses the use of drugs, tobacco, or alcohol, encourages unlawful discrimination against any person or group, or promotes the use of violence or the violation of any law or district policy.
Reserve the authority to rename the school, individual building, or facility if it is determined that the person named, subsequent to receiving the naming, has engaged in any of the prohibited acts stated in item 1.a.i.2 above or other criminal or unlawful acts that might bring the district into disrepute.
No two schools in the district shall be given the same name.
Renaming of Schools
Schools named for a person will retain that person's name as part of the site's name as long as the site facility is used for instructional purposes by the district and the person remains in good standing per 1.i.3. Exceptions to this policy may occur only under extraordinary circumstances and after thorough study by the Board of Education.
Timing of Names
A new school facility may be named as soon as the need for a school is known and verified.
