BP 6161.11 — SUPPLEMENTARY INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
Instruction BP 6161.11(a)
SUPPLEMENTARY INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
The Board of Education takes great care in the selection and adoption of instructional
materials so that they will effectively support adopted courses of study and meet current
curricular goals. Taken as a whole, instructional materials should present a broad
spectrum of knowledge and viewpoints, reflect the ethnic and cultural diversity of our
society, and enhance the use of multiple teaching strategies and technologies.
The Board of Education encourages teachers to use supplementary materials which are
relevant to curriculum objectives and appropriate for students' ages and abilities. By
using such materials, teachers can introduce content and instructional strategies that
enrich the curriculum, enhance learning, help students make critical judgments, and
stimulate their intellectual growth.
When selecting supplementary materials for classroom use, teachers should carefully
review and provide appropriate introductory and follow-up activities. Supplementary
materials will not supplant the use of basic adopted texts or teaching activities. Materials
must be used within legal copyright limits and district regulations for use of copyrighted
materials.
(cf. 6162.6 - Use of Copyrighted Materials)
The Superintendent or designee shall establish a prescreening process to be used
when a teacher desires to use supplementary audiovisual media or literature. This
process shall include approval by the site principal. The audiovisual media or literature
may be used if found educationally suitable when so previewed.
Before using any supplementary audiovisual media which is not G-rated, including
nonrated media, the teacher shall secure approval from the site principal and shall notify
parents/guardians in writing that the media will be used. Individual students without
written parent/guardian permission will be excused from activities involving the media
and the student will be excused to an alternative supervised activity. Parent/guardian
notification is not required for audiovisual material from the District Media collection or
for special events of a historical nature such as presidential announcements, natural
disasters, or current events of national importance if the teacher and principal determine
that the materials are age appropriate, relevant to the curriculum, and do not deal with
topics which may be deemed controversial.
Before using any supplementary literature dealing with any topics that may be deemed
controversial, principal approval and written parent/guardian notification is required.
Individual students without written parent/guardian permission will be excused from
specific activities involving supplementary reading assignments and the student will be
given an alternative assignment.
