October 30, 2023 Special Board Meeting
The Chino Valley Unified School District Board of Education convened a special meeting on October 30, 2023, to act on two items: two student expulsion cases and a construction bid award for ongoing modernization work at Chino High School. The entire meeting, from call to order through adjournment, ran five minutes.
Call to Order and Closed Session
Board President Sonja Shaw called the meeting to order at 1:08 p.m., with Trustees Don Bridge and Andrew Cruz also present; Trustees Jon Monroe and James Na were absent 1. No one addressed the board on the closed-session item before Shaw adjourned the board into closed session at 1:08 p.m. to discuss student discipline matters 1. The board reconvened in open special session at 1:12 p.m., with the same trustees present and absent as at roll call; the minutes record that no action requiring public disclosure was taken in closed session 1. Board Clerk Andrew Cruz led the Pledge of Allegiance, and no one addressed the board on items on the open agenda 1.
Consent Calendar
The board's open-session business consisted of two consent items 2:
- Student Expulsion Cases 23/24-04 and 23/24-11 — approved on the recommendation of the district's Expulsion Hearing Administrative Panel 2. District background materials describe expulsion as an action reserved for severe or prolonged breaches of discipline, used "only when there is a history of misconduct, when other forms of discipline, including suspension, have failed to bring about proper conduct, or when the student’s presence causes a continuing danger to him/herself or others" 3.
- Bid No. 23-24-02F, Chino HS Aquatic Center, Gymnasium, and Locker Modernization, Bid Package 08-Rebid — awarded to Bogh Engineering, Inc. 2. Per the accompanying staff report, four bids were received on October 12, 2023, and Bogh Engineering's $1,927,000.00 bid was the low bid; the scope covers renovation of the original gymnasium, boys' shower and locker room, and swimming pool facilities and associated pool systems and equipment, to be funded through Measure G Building Fund 21 4.
