Board of Education — September 21, 2017
or a commitment that she is making to herself or maybe to everybody in here to make this year the best it can possibly be and after she's done sharing she's gonna hold on that training and she's gonna pass it on to someone in this room anyone in this room you're all connected whether your friends are not whether you hang out or
not whether you text each other or not okay you are all connected because you are all part of a bigger thing hello my name is Hayden Garcia and I am the 2017-2018 vice president at Lila's bigs junior high from August 21st and to the 23rd our eighth grade staff at Briggs organized a welcome week for my eighth
grade class of 2018 it was by far the best experience I've ever had starting at any school year we did many memorable team-building and self-esteem activities and of which my favorite was the team ski races the Welcome Week was definitely a surprise as all the eighth grade students were brought into our multi-purpose room right at the start of
the first day of school it helped us to get to know each other more and for us to get to know our teachers good evening good evening my name is Kate Silva and I am the a/s Briggs ASB president our eighth grade teachers have stressed that we the students the staff and that administration at Briggs are all in the
same team they introduced us to the growth versus the fixed mindset which has opened up a new way for all the Briggs eighth graders to try harder and believe in ourselves more Welcome Week has started our last year at Briggs off on the right foot and we'd like to thank our teachers for taking the time out to
set up set up this event I would like I think every student this just district should experience a welcome week of their own just like we did thank you for your time thank you for giving us this opportunity to share with all of you so don't go way too far because I know board members are gonna have some
comments mr. Nam yeah I have visited your school recently I loved it I wish I had that type of experience my junior high school so I'd like to thank all the teachers you guys worked very very hard and you really have cared for you really have killed for our students and and gentleman back there I told him that
he'll be a great leader one day remember mr. just real quick you know you mentioned the word climate change climate change before and after you but I've seen a dramatic change and I always think about you know the kids that are in the corner by themselves and with all these activities that you do you probably also have a lot of kids like
that that that has shifted yeah they've shifted a lot so good job thank you well my comments first of all I noticed the Briggs logo on the multi-purpose room that looks awesome that is awesome because they didn't have it when my boys were there baby so that program I wish my boys would have experienced that because that just I mean you can just
see the kids bonding and just working together what a great program it is okay not to say that any other schools don't have but Briggs has exceptional teachers I happen to know that because my boys went to Briggs and so to the teachers that they had are standing out there and I think actually three and actually my
youngest still goes back to visit and so just want to say thank you and continue the good work but I do have one question that the grit t-shirt is that part of it and what does that mean I would like one of the students to talk about that I believe we got this shirt from one of our cattle conferences that we go on for
your innocence okay okay every year the Renaissance class participates in kata and they bring back strategies to boost school morale and they work under the supervision of mrs. Collins well again thank you and continue to do the awesome things that you guys do thank you and I have a last comment I like to thank the principal now your voice is friendly but
you really talked to many many kids and it's good that you are become very personal and are many of our students who really needed that and you're doing a great job there you being the light so thank you thank you for your leadership thank you Thank You students for being here and for sharing with us okay so we are now at comments from
student representative Jonah would you like to share this tonight oh good evening I would like to start off by saying the Ayala theatre program they are having a play it's called the curious Savage it will be October 25th through the 28th and November 2nd through 4th general admission is $10 and we have some fliers up here if you would like some more
information on location specific location and pricing and there will be more information about what's going on in the district with all our schools after the Student Advisory Council meeting on September 26th and here all our leadership programs will discuss what's going on around our schools so we have a general idea of what everyone's doing thank you Thank You Jenna so we
are now at employee representatives and we have you know what I'm gonna do I'm gonna start alternating who we're gonna start with at the next meeting so so Denise this will be your last time that you start first all the time only because it's in the agenda but next week will be Steve and then the following week we'll even do to Yvette next and
let's let's change it up so let's go Denise with you we'll start with you CSEA good evening first I want to say thank you to the power above for the nice cool weather I actually wearing a jacket tonight so loving it last week I kind of expressed how I felt on a few things my demeanor is a little
different tonight so I do want to thank the district for taking action on the issues and concerns I dress to the board in the district at I Yela so I appreciate that they not everything's fixed but at least they're going out there they're assessing the issues and taking care of the problem so I want to say thank you to the district
mr toura CSEA is again sponsoring paraeducator conference February 20th through February 22nd 2018 at the Ontario Ontario Convention Center I went last year as well as many of our instructional aides so I am looking at dr. Anfield and he's shaking his head good job I'm giving you a heads up as soon as I get more information with the flyer and
everything I will provide that for you thank you so much appreciate it and I just think it's very important for special ed instructional aides to attend this especially with the you know we have more students in special ed and we need to make sure they're safe we need to make sure our employees are safe and this conference helps and I would
encourage any administrator or board member to attend it is absolutely fabulous so thank you dr. infill okay I'll get with you I also want to just kind of talk about respect and I think we're losing respect respect for one another from everybody and I this is kind of passionate for me but I think we need to we need to respect our students
the students need to respect the teachers the employees in administration as well need to respect those that make the least amount of them money in this district but everybody needs to respect one another and it goes for parents too they need to respect what the teachers and the classified employees are doing for their child you know it just seems like we have lost
so much respect out there and nobody in everybody's jumped there jumping at conclusions and there they're making accusations and they're not respecting what people are doing for one another so I just think respect is a big word we need to look at right thank you thank you mr. Steve ball a CT good evening well I realized this
morning that I'm officially settling in right I met with mr. Hackney this morning so he's the new guy that moves me over on the scale one of the things that I'm really enjoying about this new position is the realization that in this district you don't have to look very far to find someone who's exceptional at their job right they're everywhere
they're at the district office they're running our schools they're in our school nurse and counseling offices they're in our cafeterias and they're in our classrooms and I've talked with several exceptional elementary teachers recently who've done something that I believe is worthy of note they've agreed to take an extra student or two or three in some cases to avoid the formation of
a combo class at their school site their year is going to be a little bit tougher but nowhere near as tough as for the teacher who would have had to teach two different curriculum two different grade levels in the same classroom and they certainly deserve our things and one of these exceptional teachers is a fourth grade teacher at chaparral Mavi keen now
Mabi took four extra students she's a 36 but she told me just this week she said don't worry about me we've got a great class and I'm doing just fine well mrs. Keene is doing better than fine in the last couple of weeks moggies had two programs fully funded on donorschoose.org her first is for teaching robotics to her fourth graders
using Lego Mindstorms and the program was funded by her own family and friends the families of her students and then a matching donation by 3m it took all of 24 hours to fund the full $1,200 but she didn't stop there her second project is using Chromebooks to promote tolerance and it took four days for an anonymous donor to match
what her families had raised and now not only has she developed a great program to teach tolerance but she can use those Chromebooks to run her robotics that's an exceptional teacher and that sort of planning and development doesn't happen during the regular instructional day this is the sort of thing that our dedicated teachers do when they're home
and their families are fed and then they finish grading papers but they still can't stop thinking about what their students need and what kind of instructions going to inspire them I miss being in the classroom and I miss my ej marshall family but i'll tell you i'm so honored to have this opportunity to represent such an exceptional group
of teachers that's all thank you [Applause] Yvette Farley chant nothing tonight okay next we are at community liaisons and is Paul Rodriguez Paul Rodriguez is here Chino counsel well as summer comes to a close I would like to thank the school district for their partnership in providing mental health services to students and highlighting the Suicide Prevention Month in Chino because of the

questions regarding costly programs we offer in partnership with the district as well as to distribute and promote other city programs and events because of these events we are able to increase the visibility of the city's Bayt school-based counseling and after-school programs some of events events that I attended especially yesterday Chino day at the at the county fair here I wanted
to thank personally Donegal High School for their school marching band that kicked off the whole whole event and the parade and may it really made us proud might the city and the city to see these wonderful musicians March I am also happy to report that the yellow bus program was hugely successful and I understand that Chino brought the most
kids to the fair as part of the Kids Expo this year which was filled with educational information for everyone that was involved Cheeta was the only day at the at the fair city this year that worked with Chino Valley schools and community providers and hosting Kids Expo for myself it was the first day as a councilmember to be at
the Chino day at the fair and it was really really neat so I want to thank you thank you I don't see Cynthia Moran from Chino Hills and I don't think I see my Krieger Gloria Negrete McLeod good evening board members superintendent I'm here this evening to invite you to chafe E colleges 18th annual report to the

such kind comments at the beginning board members and members of the community as I begin my 16th year as the Iowa high school theater teacher I'm embarking on directing or producing in this case directing my 45th or 42nd main stage show at Iowa High School and coordinating student productions of the 45th of the advanced class productions when I pick shows to
produce at Iowa High School this year including the curious savage The Little Mermaid and a play that has become known throughout the world Charley's aunt I had two major considerations number one am i passionate about the show if not it never passed muster with me it won't with the audience the second and this is the most important it actually involves
two parts number one that the students will learn something about the craft of theater either technical or acting or some combination of the two and the second is that they will learn something about themselves for deep within each person regardless their future profession there is an actor whether it's a student asking a parent for a car or an employee asking a boss for a race
it is in some form another actor I'd like to invite all of you to attend our first production which begins on October 25th the Wednesday evening this year an odd night to start but I decided to go one more night because I think this shows important imagine if you will in 1950 a woman inheriting her husband's businesses and converting all those to
cash by today's standards the amount of money she had wasn't all that much it was only ten million dollars but in 1950 year when my father probably had an annual income of between 20 and 25 thousand dollars ten million dollars was a lot of money you see she wanted to use that for a foundation that would help
underprivileged people those that wanted to have some fun and couldn't they couldn't afford it so she was gonna have a foundation foundation to fund all that her three stepchildren other ideas they wanted the money for themselves 3.3 million dollars was a lot of cash in those days they wanted it she said no they said you're crazy and they
committed her to an institution with the other loonies excuse me residents and so mrs. Ethel savage hence the term the curious savage comes into this home and meets all the misfits the people that don't fit anywhere else in society and one of the beauties of this show and it amongst all the humor that's involved in all the shenanigans
when he finally shows where this money is really hidden and she has hidden it well these people finally realized their true Worth and if you attend our production you'll see that there is hope even where there is seemingly no hope I hope you can call me thank you so much thank you [Applause] hello it's been a while since I've been
up here I've been asked to share with you a program that I'm part of and just kind of give you a little heads up on what's coming down from Townsend I see what I'm doing if I mentioned to you that we were gonna study the gas laws Charles law Boyle's law that might not sound exciting maybe maybe remember that from calling
your college days or your high school days but to an eighth grader that's oh gosh oh gosh but if I said we're gonna study the gas laws by way of popcorn we're gonna pop popcorn how did you know why popcorn pops do you know why popcorn pops it's a gas explosion it's basically a steam explosion so now we have the gas
laws right this is how I this is how I learned how to introduce the gas laws is through a program that I'm part of it's through a grant that I wrote with CTA NEA the Chino Valley Water District and the FDA so the FDA accepted me as one of 25 people across the United States they sent me back east this summer and I was
selected as one of 25 from across the United States to go to this program to the I've got to work in FDA's labs during the summer along with national scientists and it was it was mind boggling at what the what they do in these labs I also got to work at the University of Maryland so now I'm
officially a Terrapin yes you could say if anybody especially a terrible man now but the experience was awesome because it allowed me to collaborate with other other educators from across the United States there were two from California Arkansas I mean you just name it they were from you know across the United States and the bonding that we did sharing of ideas
etc but one of the things was the reason before this presentation is like I said is to let you know what some of the curriculum that's gonna be coming down from Townsend because this program that I'm trying to start it's called the science of cooking and we've what we've done we've done a preliminary program at Townsend where we refurbished an old
home arts room that wasn't being utilized it was basically a storage room so um mr. Nelson mr. Nelson was gracious enough to give us some time to fix that that that culinary arts room up we have six fully functioning kitchens there now and with those kitchens along with the Civic arts teacher we bring the students in there along with science and
introduce science concepts to them like for example why do onions caramelize and we do it to the science behind all of that and we harvest from our garden that's right outside my class what I would like to do and you've been passed out some flyers is invite you to visit Townsend visit our living garden it's a basically a living lab that we have out
there and look forward to this curriculum and the connections that I have and the ability to possibly you know bring this to across the genome that's basically what I'm trying to do Thank You Veronica Nunez good evening mr. superintendent board members and senior staff my name is Veronica Nunez and I teach fourth grade at Howard kettle elementary school I
would like to speak to you tonight on the need for uniformity across the district on professional learning communities or PLC's as they're known when grade levels or departments are allowed to work together we can use the results from district and state assessments to further drive instructions we can as classroom teachers improve our practices and help our students however there is no
uniformity across the district many new teachers have not been trained on the ways that PLC's should be utilized many administrators use this time as another staff meeting or as a training session the focus of PLC's should not be to fill out forms some schools are holding PLC's weekly some monthly and some not at all few of us understand the vision the
benefit or the process since they have not been trained I was trained several years ago under dr. Dufour author and creator of PLC's along with my then administrators Kim Keys I was made to understand that this was to be a teacher driven teacher led and to give teachers the opportunity to work together to develop practices to help our students I
hope that during this year we can come to an agreement regarding the clarity of our PLC's and also receive effective training on how PLC's are to work in Chino Valley Unified School District I thank you for your attention Thank You Kathy Osmond Kathy Osmond good evening once there was a group of parents who were before this school
board and said we have identified gate students and we feel they need differentiated curriculum in fact we want them to be challenged to the utmost of their abilities we request magnet classes consisting of all gate students the school board came through those classes existed there was one class at each grade level four five and six and a
two three combo the class was look the classes were located at Richard gerd primary and they were great I know because I taught that 2nd and 3rd combo to three combo we had great achievement we learned two languages we did an inventions unit that actually invented something we performed a Shakespeare play we did a pioneer simulation game
and a pioneer dinner we went to museums we figured out why on Catalina Island all the elephants were pygmies and all the birds were larger than a breadbox we did the great books curriculum and we did all the stuff we were supposed to learn as well we made our own assembly series and shared it with the rest of
the school we could do this again I request that the board or appropriate district employees look into making another try at borba as our gate magnet I have three attributes I would like to request all the grades need to be there at once not just the second grade not just the two through second and third grades I request they be staffed those
gate classes be staffed only by teachers with gate credentials and that we announced before hand who the teachers will be for those classes so that the families can make their to say Asians also based on whether they think those teachers would be worth the effort of driving their children across the district and if we did that I think we
would have a wonderful program again after all GERD primary and Borba are one in the same school and so if there are families out there that would like this kind of curriculum or teachers who'd like to teach in it please contact me and we'll work together in country Springs I'm contact me a country Springs and we'll work together to work for this
issue thank you okay so we are now at changes and deletions Pat are there any changes or deletions the following changes are on the agenda item 2a - revision of bylaws of the board 9121 president page 19 delete number three C is item 2 C to page 41 school sponsored trips under Chino high school musical festival long beach february 8th through

okay board members mr. cruise do you have any polls no polls mr. Nam I have no pools mrs. Sykes to see to Shh forty forty-one and I have to see one and also to e4 page 109 okay so for the remainder of the calendar I mean I have a motion please so moved we have a second it's been moved by mr.
now second by mr. Cruz all in favor aye opposed referential motion passes for zero okay so let's start with actually we're going to start with 2 c1 the student expulsion readmission I mean because we didn't have everybody there okay for to see one well there's no discussion all in favor I'm sorry make up don't move second this
has been moved by mrs. Pike second by mr. not all in favor motion passes for zero okay so for to see to Rancho no not for preferential that for this one this is a young student matter to see to page 41 may have a motion so moved we have a second it's been moved by mr. not second by mr. Cruz mrs. Sykes
so mrs. Kaler I understand that the music festival at Long Beach is Chino Hills High School not Chino High School correct correct but my question is four hundred and thirty dollars per student at seventy eight students is thirty three thousand dollars for a music festival in Long Beach and so I just that seems like an exorbitant amount of money so what is
that going to include the field trip will include three days of lodging transportation the cost of the festival and food does the trans the lodging include students sharing or is it individual I'm not sure about that but I can get back to you with that not to worry Thank You mr. Cruz it's gonna be a wonderful experience they won't forget
it when they're our age remember these memories it's good it's good to great memories any other comments I see none all in favor I oppose preferential motion passes for zero the next one is to e4 we have a motion so moved we have a second second it's been moved by mr. na second by mrs. fights and I'm actually pulling this
because I know that mrs. Blair would probably pull this because she always reads these resolutions so this is the resolution for the week of the school administrator that were and I will read the resolution whereas leadership matters for California's public education system and the more than six million students it serves where a student whereas school administrators are passionate lifelong learners who
believe in the value of quality public education whereas the title school administrator is a broad term used to define many education leadership posts superintendents assistant superintendents principals assistant principals special education and adult education leaders curriculum and assessment leaders school business officials classified education leaders and the other district employees are considered administrators whereas providing quality service for student
success is paramount for the profession whereas most school administrators begin their careers as teachers the average administrator has served in public education for more than a decade most of California superintendents have served in education for more than twenty years such experience is beneficial in their work chief effectively and efficiently lead public education and improved student achievement whereas public
schools operate with lean management systems across the nation public schools employ fewer fewer managers and supervisors supervisors than most public and private sector industries including transportation foodservice manufacturing utilities construction publishing and public administration and whereas school leaders depend on a network of support from school communities fellow administrators teachers parents students businesses community members board trustees colleges and universities
community and faith-based organizations elected officials and district and county staff and resource is to promote ongoing student achievement and school success whereas reach research shows great schools are led by great principals and great districts are led by great superintendents these site leaders are supported by extensive administrative networks throughout the state whereas the state of California has declared
October 8th through the 14 2017 as the week of the administrator in education code four four zero one five point one and whereas the future of California's public education system depends on upon the quality of its leadership now therefore be it resolved by the Board of Education of the Chino Valley Unified School District that all leaders be
commended for their for the contributions they make to successful student achievement ok so thank you administrators all in favor aye opposed preferential motion passes 4 0 okay we are now at may go back here we are now at information items are there any questions or comments on information items board members okay seeing none we are now at communications mr. Gregory
I'll be very quick so mr. mr. Hulk the Iona Theatre Company presents the curious savage by John Patrick finding the true value of friendship October 25th through the 28th and November 2nd through the 4th at the multi-purpose room at 7:08 p.m. and then Saturday matinee November 5th to 8th 208 p.m. produced by the Yama Theater our booster directed by Miss Larisa abadaka
and mr. dick hole tickets at the Lobby box office twenty minutes before show rubenesque ayala high school now I get this feeling that this is gonna be really great it's just my gut tells me and usually my guts right so I think this is gonna be exciting I want to UM especially acknowledge all the district-wide and community wide
efforts where are so many people youngsters and adults alike have come together to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey and Irma so much devastation loss of lives and homes and a feeling of hopelessness I'm so grateful for our community spirit of serving those who are in need of a helping hand thank you Thank You mr. Cruz mr. North I also like to thank you
sir for calm when I go to one of your programs I can tell you that it's much better than Disneyland programs and you can see it for real not just on TV and you just had put so many of your time and sweat with all these children and you made them real professional so thank you for all your work you are truly a
legend in that school thank you thank you I have attended hashtag I can help club meeting at Iowa high school I was amazing where kids themselves stood up said no more bullying in our campus and throughout our communities and and they would reach out to our lonely students in a lunchtime and and introduce themselves and and just get people
involved but also the dough bean nowadays they're on online they'll be on computer sites and the right positive things for all for our humanity they said because they haven't seen enough of bad news enough of bullying enough of a bad word so not only on TV but really on our streets and our schools and they wanted to stop put stop to that so I
really appreciate their efforts and and thank them so students do every student's here please stand up like to all students in our Chino Valley Unified School District because we honor you guys we honor you guys and because of you guys we're here having these long meetings and all our teachers so thank you thank you you can sit down yeah chino hills' crime
prevention program was an excellent program this year and i didn't know for the first time that i should have i have kids but there's a curfew ten o'clock age 18 years old you need to be at home so that's what i've learned so thank you for our sorrows and and and great efforts we had many a parents
attended meeting so shows that how important it is to protecting our children I saw Joe night she knows I squid lunchtime and he was worried by his math test he didn't well but yes our students do study even during their lunch times and and they're very dedicated and I'm so proud of them you know high school nutrient service lady
she was in tears because one of her co-workers recently passed away and she was only only 64 years old and I have shared with her no matter how fun the Disneyland might be we know that we're coming home so in some aspect this could be a Disneyland and sometimes we get caught up in so many things on this
earth but when thumbs up we need to go back home and she fully agreed so one thing we agreed both of us is that we need to appreciate everything that we have the things that we don't have and and find blessings instead of complaints because this life is not supposed to be a perfect life but we have awesome CSA
members and teachers that go through a very difficult times in daily basis because we have so many people so we need to keep them always in our mind mr. Macintosh from my Chino Hills High School is a math teacher but he someone who might be a very loud voice person but students tells me that whenever there's a difficult times going on with
any of these students he would really make sure that kid will be touched by other students in all different manners and I think that's part of making the students a whole person not just the math and numbers but making a whole person is very important and this is what touches the kids this is what touches the kids yes they do want to
receive all a pluses and all that but these feelings that who have left a high school still feels the same way that they have learned something for being a good human being so I'd like to thank you mr. McIntosh I'd like to ask to close this meeting in in memory of those about 25 students died in the recent
earthquake in Mexico it's so sad that the young lives are perished in the same way that we lose unborn babies and then you talk about respect that respect what does people talk about black life matters and all that but respect really starts with everyone's life everybody wants life and we start discounting our life then we can fall apart so let's put
our minds together respecting everyone's life as Danny said said thank you thank you mister not mrs. Sykes last week I was at a at a Catholic school in Orange County to see a performance and they said it's our first annual performance I thought gosh if it's the first gonna be annual this morning I was at the hundred
and tenth annual awards assembly at our boys Republic that sad thing not to take away from the first annual production last week that was also very nice but this is pretty impressive they had over $100,000 that they had accumulated over the year that were awarded to boys and girls girls who attend the day program in Monrovia that
I was not very aware of but it was really a wonderful uplifting event and they do a terrific job at boys Republic both the foundation as well as the education component so it was a great morning here's a hundred and eleventh thank you thank you mrs. Sykes mr. Joseph congratulations to don Lugo's High's lead academy it has been named a

Orosco and me yesterday tomorrow is a big day for our freshman football players at both Don Lugo and Chino high school at Lugo the freshmen families have gotten together to create posters and banners and I created the first-ever milk carton game

Joseph so I'm going to try and be brief with my retirements or announcing the retirements Martha macca wits 29 years of service assistant principal secretary at Chino Hills High School yes pretty poor eke 12 years of service special ed
Chino Hills High School I want to wish you all good luck and a great retirement although I know that when people retire they end up doing something different but have fun and whatever you're doing a couple of comments this evening on item 2 c4 we had a contract for embedded ROP classes during the regular school day I just want to ROP and we all are trying
to prepare our students for college and career-ready and so I want to applaud the schools for taking advantage of ROP classes they've really changed I mean ROP is totally different from when I was in school and so applaud to to the schools for taking advantage of it and then next board members I just want to share that Sammartino County and
Riverside County are is school board's associations or having the fall joint meeting on October 16th and this year I was able to send out our asked actually Pat to send out an email to the principal's inviting a high school to do the national anthem and it went to the first high school that responded and it just so happened that Chino Hills High
School responded so this year we will be having at the joint at the fall joint meeting we will be having the Chino Hills High School Chamber Singers so will be treated by them as well and then two other things one is I would like to ask mr. Joseph that we look into the PLC and make sure that it is uniform across
the district because that's something that we've touted as uniformity and and being unified so if we can do that and then finally I just want to make a comment about something that I haven't talked about in public although I have talked about it and private with mr. Joseph and and others and the reason I'm going to talk about it is because Denise
might have mentioned the word respect Steve ball mentioned the word exceptional and I'm hoping that somewhere down the road that our district and I understand that this happened years ago that our district provides some type of customer service because that's what we're here for we're here to serve others and it is about respect and it is about being
exceptional and it is about appreciating and so it begins at the top and goes all the way down and so I hope that we develop a culture of exceptional customer service to everyone out there and so finally mr. na we will close this meeting in memory and with their thoughts of those who have lost their lives or have suffered in the recent
national disasters so with that I adjourn at 8:07 you
